Many people need walkie talkies for varying reasons. Some people just need a pair to communicate with their kids playing in the yard, and some require a walkie talkie pack to keep in touch with friends when on a road trip, camping or hiking a trail. You could also be here scouting for radios for your business; these radios have become part of the core of any business as they ensure easy and affordable communication across floors, bridging distances between your members of staff.

Considerations for choosing the best walkie talkies
Choosing the right walkie talkie brand or model that would fit your intentions entirely might be tricky as there are many radios on sale. To ensure that you get the most value for your money spent, we have the best handheld radios, considering the following factors and several customer reviews.
When it comes to the radio’s dimensions, there is no single size fits all; it boils down to the preference of the person who the radio is intended for. If you want to buy radios for kids, you should look into smaller radios that would be easy to carry around. one about the same size as most cell phones. Also, if you do not intend to use the radio for long hours, you can opt for a lightweight radio, but if you are an outdoorsman that spends more time in the wild or on the road, it will benefit you to pick out a relatively larger radio. In many cases, the bigger radios offer more features/functions, and their weight is often attributed to their significantly larger battery, which translates to more talk time and standby time.
The range of any communication device is the distance between that radio and another for you to communicate effectively and efficiently. Like the radio’s dimensions, how much range you would need would depend on your intention for the two-way radio. If you purchase one or more radio units to serve as a baby monitor, you do not need many miles as your child would always be in reach. If the radio is to be used outdoors, you need as much range as possible; it would come in handy, especially in emergencies.
Your radio range is affected majorly by two factors: the device’s power output and the obstacles/obstructions in the terrain.
The range advertised on the product is often gotten in the most ideal of conditions, which might be impractical in everyday use. The range is expected to be significantly better in plains or areas with sparse or no obstructions at all.
The radio’s power output affects the transmission range, with more power (in watts) allowing for transmission across long distances. For significantly more wattage, you can opt for GMRS radios instead of the more common FRS radios. Check the FAQs for more information about FRS and GMRS radios.
Your ham radio is about the mobile phone’s size, so chances that it would fall out your hand or slip off the belt clip are high. Also, if you intend to use the radio outdoors, it could come in contact with the elements, and when it does, it is expected that it continues to work fine. The higher-end radios often offer protection against water, shock and dust. And if kids would use the radio, it should survive the wear and tear that comes from constant use.
Consider a channel a chatroom; it is that space made available for you and whoever you plan to converse with to send and receive transmissions privately. This means that more channels give you more options, ease of use and allow you more opportunities to have your private conversations; this also means that the more channels on the radio, the costlier it likely would be.
These are not the radio’s primary function; they do not aid communication but make for a better user experience.
Weather Radio: This feature is available on radios with NOAA weather channels; this keeps the updated weather reports so that you can be at least one step ahead of mother nature. These weather channels add an extra layer of security when you are braving the outdoors.
Headset Jack: For people looking to listen and send information privately and people that like to listen to the FM radio when they work, the headset jack is an excellent add-on. There are many headset jack types, so you need to know the one that comes with your radio so you would be able to pick out the right headset/headphone/earpiece.
The radio is only as good as the battery it has fitted; if the walkie talkie has all the exciting gizmos, it would be of no use if the radio is always powered off or if you are always scampering in search of a power source. This is why your radio of choice must offer a long battery life that can allow you to be on the move for long without needing to plug it in or swap batteries. The higher-end radios offer the users more than one power source ranging from the use of disposable AA or AAA batteries (alkaline battery, a lithium-ion battery) or a rechargeable battery pack. It is also important that you can charge the radio using desktop chargers or dock stations and even USB when you are on the road.
Many people believe that a proper walkie talkie is a luxury item, and you would need to break the bank to afford one. This is not always true; there are expensive ones and budget radios that would offer much value for the money spent.

Still, the purchase is worth it in the long run, as the units are very durable and sure to outlive the cheaper radios.
Long Range Walkie Talkies
Suppose you intend to converse across short distances. In that case, any radio can do that job, but if you have your eyes on the longer miles, you would need bigger guns; cue long range walkie talkies. These are most effective on large construction sites or outdoor events that require multiple parties to coordinate actions over a large acreage,
What are the different headset connectors?
The different models have different headphone connector types; the most popular have been listed below with some of their compatible radios.
Motorola ‘M1’ Connector
This is used on professional Motorola radios, some of which include the XTN446, GP300, CP040, GP320; it also works on the Lynx PT600 and PT658, PT6500 Kirisun models.
It has two jack plugs about 8mm apart, with one being 2.5 mm and the other 3.5mm.
Kenwood ‘K1’ Connector
This is compatible with all Kenwood radios and other smaller radio makers like Puxing, Linton, and Kirisun.
The centers 11.5mm apart, with one being 2.5 mm and the other being 3.5 mm.
Motorola ‘M2’ Connector
This connector is used on Cobra microtalk radios and Motorola’s consumer range radios.
It features a single 2.5 mm jack with 3 connections.
This connector type is physically identical to the Binatone Radio connector, with the difference being the internal wiring,
Binatone ‘B’ Connector
Compatible with Binatone terrain radios and other Binatone walkies talkies also works on Clarke TR300 and Exibel radios.
It has a single 2.5 mm jack with three electrical connections.
It is identical to the Motorola M2 connector. Still, it does not work with the same radios as the internal wiring is different.
ICOM ’11’ Connector
This is used with ICOM radios, with centers 10.5 mm apart, with one jack plug being 2.5 mm and the other being 3.5 mm.
Motorola ‘M3’ Connector
This is compatible with the newer Motorola models.
ICOM ’12’ Connector
This connector is compatible with older Cobra models and some ICOM radios. The center is 10.5 mm apart, with one jack plug being 2.5 mm and the other plug being 3.5 mm.
ENTEL ‘E2’ Connector
It is used with the ‘HX’ series radios by Entel.
Vertex/Yaesu ‘Y’ Connector
This is used on Yaesu and Vertex walkie talkies, and it is a single jack plug with four connections.
VHF or UHF Radio?
These are the frequencies these radios transmit. Each frequency type has its advantages over the other, depending on the circumstance or the scenario in which they are used.
VHF (Very High Frequency)
These radios broadcast between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. They are better suited for outdoor use, in open terrain or in the line of sight of the other person you are communicating with. This is the ideal frequency setup for communication at a construction site or outdoor festivals. VHF radios are the preferred choice for aviation and maritime communications.
UHF (Ultra High Frequency)
These radios have a much shorter wavelength. This means they can easily penetrate through concrete and steel, making them the preferred option for indoor communication, unlike VHF radios that are at their best when talking to some in line of sight. UHF radios broadcast between 300 MHz and 3 GHz; they have shorter antennas making them practical for use in crowded hallways and other confine spaces.
FRS GMRS Radio?
Family Radio Service (FRS) radios are generally cheaper than General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios. This is due to the significant difference in their power output and transmission range. FRS radios are limited to half a watt (500 milliwatts) of power, while GMRS radios can have as much as 50 watts of power. The only downside to using GMRS radios is that you would require a license to be issued by the Federal Communications Commission; you can listen to broadcasts but would be unable to transmit without a license; doing so could see you face some legal actions. FRS channels, on the other hand, do not need any license, and you can listen and transmit without a license from the FCC.
